Towing: 6,200 pounds when properly equipped with the 2.0L Hurricane 4, against up to 5,000 pounds for the gas Highlander. That is 1,200 pounds of margin. Ground clearance and the 4x4 setup: 10.9 inches with air suspension against 8 inches, plus a 4-Wheel Drive EPA rating on the Hurricane configuration and fording rated up to 24 inches.

Power: 324 hp and 332 lb-ft against 265 hp and 310 lb-ft.

Standard cabin tech: a 12.3-inch Uconnect 5 NAV touchscreen on every trim, with available McIntosh 19-speaker audio, a passenger touchscreen and a Head-Up Display.

Where the Toyota Highlander Wins

Seat count: The Highlander is listed at 7 or 8 seats depending on configuration. The L tops out at 7.

A hybrid in the lineup: Toyota offers a Highlander Hybrid, rated 35/35/35 MPG in AWD. The Grand Cherokee lineup here is gas only, rated 21/26/23, so those figures are different powertrains rather than a like-for-like reading. If a hybrid is what you want, Toyota has one here and Jeep does not.

Choose the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee if you tow anything approaching 5,000 pounds, you want the 4x4 configuration for unplowed mornings, you want the air suspension's clearance, or you want the stronger engine and will take the fuel bill that comes with it. Choose the Grand Cherokee L if you need a third row and still want that 6,200-pound rating.

Choose the 2026 Toyota Highlander if fuel economy is the deciding number, you do not tow near the limit, and an eighth seat matters more to you than clearance or towing margin.
