The Cummins makes much more torque than the HEMI, and the two engines use different transmissions and axle ratios.
Towing and Payload by Configuration
Each towing and payload rating below belongs to one exact configuration, named in the first column with its engine and axle ratio beside it. Change any part of it and the rating can change.
These 5 terms help you read the table:
- GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) is the rated limit on what the truck can weigh fully loaded, with passengers and cargo counted.
- Payload is how much weight in passengers and cargo the truck is rated to carry.
- GCWR (gross combined weight rating) is the rated limit on the loaded truck and a loaded trailer weighed together.
- Trailer weight rating is how heavy a trailer the truck is rated to pull in its specific configuration.
- Axle ratio is the number of times the driveshaft turns for each turn of the wheels.
Because GCWR caps the truck and trailer together, a truck carrying its full payload may not be able to pull a trailer at its full trailer weight rating.

On the 4x4 Crew Cab Big Horn/Lone Star with the 6-ft 4-in box, the Cummins version has a different axle ratio and a higher GVWR than the HEMI version. It is rated for a heavier trailer and a higher GCWR, with nearly the same payload. In the table, the Crew Cab Laramie and the Mega Cab Laramie are both 4x4 and differ only in the cab. Of the two, the Mega Cab is rated lower for payload, trailer weight and GCWR. For a truck not shown here, or before you hitch up, ask us to confirm the ratings for that exact truck.
